Principle of Design...UNITY. Unity creates the sense of oneness or wholeness in a work of art. Unity works like an invisible glue...joining all of the art elements in an artpiece to work together.

Project: Unity Cartoons.

part 1...

1. pick a single frame comic cell.

2. 9"x12" paper - mark off 4 - 3"x4" rectangles and number 1-4.

3. sketch the cartoon (as it is shown) into the first frame...along with any words.

4. inside the next 3 rectangles sketch your interpretation of the final 3 pictures to complete the comic strip.

5. now add the words (or punch lines) to make the pictures unified...YES, words must be in each cell.

part 2...

1. 6"x18" watercolor paper - landscape position - name on the back.

2. border...1" in on both sides, 1/2" down from top, 1/2" up from bottom...creating a 5"x16" rectangle.

3. divide 5"x16" rectangle into 4 - 4"x5" areas.

4. use light contour lines and enlarge each cell from sketches...this time adding as much detail as possible - NO shading.

5. add the words.

6. use watercolors - creating more unity through the use of color.

7. when dry...add more details with colored pencils.
